Famed Critic Pauline Kael Speaking Of Bette Midler In “Divine Madness”

Mister D: I remember the time Pauline Kael was on Tom Snyder’s old talk show. He asked her who should win the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1979. Without pause she said Bette Midler for the Rose. She said I haven’t heard lines read like that in decades and if she doesn’t win the Oscars mean nothing. This was when critics had considerable power over what was a hit or miss in movies She was considered one of the greatest critics. Check out some books on her. Bruce Vilanch said he sat next to her in Divine Madness. She was a big Bette Midler fan before the movies. She was upset with the end product of Divine Madness because of the editing and how they ended the movie. She said a real Bette Midler concert would not end like that. It would end up with a happy, upbeat song, like “Friends” After she saw Jinxed, she was sure Hollywood would ruin the Bette we knew growing up. That’s me hearsay and gossip. IF I’m wrong Bruce, let me know. It’s been a while and I might have succumbed to the Telephone Game. Read More

Bette Midler On Isn’t She Great:

Bette Midler On Isn’t She Great: “It’s very strange, but it’s pretty funny. I play Jaqueline Susann in a long brown wig, but don’t tell anyone it’s a wig! They’ll never know.” (Lakeland Ledger - Oct 4, 1998)

Bette Midler On Radio Demographics:

Bette Midler On Radio Demographics: “I think for the most part radio stinks. All this demographic stuff and all this marketing stuff where they will play only a certain kind of music and you can’t be older than 25 to get on the station is nuts. I think it makes for a very ignorant audience.” (Lakeland Ledger, Oct 4, 1998)

Bette Midler On Her Audience’s Diverse Taste In Music:

Bette Midler On Her Audience’s Diverse Taste In Music: “My audience has been great about that. They like music. They don’t look down their nose at people because they don’t make a certain kind of music. They have respect for musicians and they have respect for arrangers.” (Lakeland Ledger, Oct 4, 1998)

Bette Midler On Respect In The Movie Industry:

Bette Midler On Respect In The Movie Industry: “I’ve also discovered in doing this film that people really do respect me. In rock-and-roll, if you’re not on the charts every minute of the day, you really feel you’re a failure, and it’s not like that in acting. If you do the scene well and they see the dailies, they’ll come to you and say: ‘You know, that’s a good piece of work you did.’ And people respect me because I’m full of ideas. There are a lot of people here with lots of experience in making movies, and they really respect me because I’m not making it with the gaffer and not making it with the sound man though he’s cute, and they know I really ove what I do. I’m ready for the work.” (March 1979) Read More

Reddit used to be the main focus of fan Q&A’s (or AMA’s in their lingo) but many are now starting to use Facebook which seems to now be the go to site for up-to-the-minute info and interaction with artists.

The Underlying Meanness Of The First Wives Club

The Underlying Meanness Of The First Wives Club

goldie-diane-bette

Remember when we all stopped saying “real women”? I don’t recall which trend piece woke me up to that shift in our cultural lingo, but I do know how fast it clicked. For most of my conscious life, “real women” had been the phrase used to describe women who weren’t models, who seemed relatable rather than aspirational, women who weren’t too hot or too confident but were, you know, normal gals. (And it went without saying that these were probably straight, cis women, too.) Read More

[on “Misery”] “I turned that down because I didn’t want to saw off someone’s foot, even though the role won an Oscar [for Kathy Bates]. It was stupid to say no to those pictures. And while I was unsure about doing this play [on Broadway as Sue Mengers], I felt it was time for me to say yes.”

“As an actor you’re supposed to take jobs that will challenge you or force fans to see you in a different light. By the ’90s, I wasn’t really an actor anymore. I was someone who went on the road with these gigantic concerts. I got so far away from what they told you in acting class: Do something different. Producers kept offering me the “Sister Act” movie, but I said, “My fans don’t want to see me in a wimple.” I literally said, “My fans don’t want to see me in a wimple.”.” Read More
