BetteBack July 20, 1974: What Does It Feel Like to Create Today’s Music?

Kenosha News

“This isn’t what I want my career to be, but what the fates do to me and what and where my audiences carry me. It’s something that you can’t do by yourself. It has to be in concert-they love you and you love them back; it all comes from that.”

I don’t want to make a movie and I’m not interested in doing a play. I want to work out all the things I have to say within the framework of the music. My show is a show, not an act, and there’s a very subtle difference. An act is not as honest as I’m trying to be. Read More

BetteBack April 1974: Bette Midler by Bette Midler

Bette Midler: Bette Midler (Atlantic)
April 1974

41uIWA1z-CL._SS500_

ALL THIS diverse material – old Broadway show tunes, a Phil Spector classic, a Wardell Gray jazz novelty, soul songs, Dylan – you can almost hear those presenting Bette murmuring, “See how versatile she is?”

The singer herself doesn’t project that sort of pretension, but her unfortunate misunderstanding of the material, her inability or unwillingness to distinguish between the real and the artificial, the astigmatism that has her seeing camp as humor and pathos as tragedy are all as insidious as the adulation of her adoring audience. Yes, she does lots of different types of songs. But she does nearly all of them wrong. Read More

BetteBack October 29, 1973: Bette Midler’s New Album Will Be A Collector’s Item Dream

Greeley Daily Tribune
October 29, 1973

In little over a year Bette Midler has become the most exciting new star of the 1970s.

Her club and concert appearances are all SRO; she has a TV special in the offering; her first album on Atlantic records turned to gold.

You can’t ask for much more than that in such a short period of time.

Bette’s new album is full of the magic that made her a superstar in so short a time and it’s entitled simply “Bette Midler.” She sings songs old and new, investing them all with the warmth and feeling that gives them new life and freshness, whether they are happy or tragic, camp or torch. Facebook seems to have something of legality issue on its hands, with the recent news that several artists, including Prince, Celine Dion, and The Beatles have had their names put up for sale as advertising keywords on the popular social network.

What do Prince, The Beatles, The Chainsmokers, Celine Dione, Maroon 5, Jimi Hendrix and Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. all have in common? Each of their names are for sale as advertising keywords on Facebook. (Although we’ll just look at Facebook today, it’s highly likely that the same is true of Google and other advertising networks that profit from the sale of keywords.) Read More
