7 Divas Who Should Replace Bette Midler in ‘Hello, Dolly!’ and the One Who Probably Will
Written by Alexander Kacala on May 26, 2017

Bette Midler is slaying audiences every night as Dolly Levi in Broadway’s recent revival of the classic musical comedy Hello, Dolly! Well, not every night, as Donna Murphy fills in on Tuesdays.

There’s been no word from production on who will replace Midler when she leaves after a year, but here are eight divas we think could fill her shoes. We’ve ranked them in terms of likeliness, ending with a rumor that has been circulating and which seems very probable (and very … country). Read More

BetteBack February 18, 1973: Wrinkled Records

There Is an oldies boom in progress. Songs, singers and styles echoing an earlier time in music are becoming a minor phenomenon of the season. Think about It: Johnny Rivers has a hit single! Not only is Rivers an anachronism, but so is the song, “Rockln’ Pneumonia and The Boogie Woogie Flu”. In 1973? It doesn’t end there.

Elton John’sCrocodile Rock” is an ebullient call to the Miles: “I remember when rock was young/me and Susie had so much fun.” And then: “But the years went by and rock just died/Susie went and left me for some other guy/long nights cryln’ by the record machine/dreamln’ of my Chevy and my old blue jeans.” The cover shows a young couple going Into a movie house. He’s wearing jeans, sneakers, leather jacket, and greasy D.A. His date In flats, pony tail, gathered ankle length skirt and pink sweater. And parked at the curb, a chrome-soaked Plymouth. The Marquee Flashing “Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player” starring Elton John. Read More

[on what she perceives as the ‘pornification’ of pop music] “Well, whatever strictures there were have fallen apart. And now it’s whatever you feel like doing you can do. I mean, apparently people really like to pretend they’re having sex. They really like to slap each other’s butts. [My advice?] Trust your talent. You don’t have to make a whore of yourself to get ahead. You really don’t.”

Where are the women this summer? The real women, we mean.

The real men are present and accounted for. Cruise, Connery, Eastwood, Schwarzenegger, Stallone.

In this sea of blockbuster testosterone, the females are merely Hollywood small fry, mostly young supporting actresses and hardly household names.

Jeanne Tripplehorn in “The Firm.” Rene Russo in “In the Line of F ire.” Janine Turner in “CHffh anger.” Say who? Read More

Presenting “Love Always,” a recurring feature in which we pay tribute to the women who helped shape our views on pop culture.

Since the day she giggled into our lives on Laugh-In, Goldie Hawn has been one of brightest rays of sunshine in Hollywood, an effervescent entity who brings warmth and humanity to every role she takes.

Always one of the greatest allies of the LGBT community (her apology for that tweet about the President of Nigeria was heartfelt and sincere), she’s used her celebrity to further humanitarian causes, and her iconic status is well-deserved. Read More

BetteBack February 15, 1973: Rolling Stone -The Gold Lamé Dream of Bette Midler

The Gold Lamé Dream of Bette Midler
What does the ‘last of the tacky ladies’ have to say to her first Rolling Stone cover story? ‘Puh-leez, honey’
By Ed McCormack February 15, 1973

That last show at the Tubs was the worst. I’m telling you, it was the pits, honey.”

Curled on the couch in her Greenwich Village apartment, Bette Midler flutters a hand over her heart at the mere memory of that last chaotic gig at The Continental Baths. Without her stage make-up, she fades into plainness. Except for the nose, which remains formidable in the Streisand mold, the features contained within her pear-shaped face are vague and nondescript. Even her electric orange curls seem to settle down into a dull carrot-colored mass. Bette Midler, offstage, looks like a girl who doesn’t get asked out on Saturday night. Read More

Bette Midler for the Adele generation?

August 7, 2011
Vikki Stone: Big Neon Letters Gilded Balloon
Billiard Room ****… [Derived headline]
Vikki Stone: Big Neon Letters
Gilded Balloon Billiard Room
by James Whatley

If Kate Nash was a character invented by Viz, she’d be Vikki Stone. Sitting at her keyboard, backed by her band The Flashbacks (smiling guitarist, deadpan drummer), she sings about modern life and failed relationships in a manner that takes filth to the highest level of art.

The spoken bits in between aren’t any cleaner, and at times it’s like eavesdropping on the dirtiest hen-night bitchfest ever. Her original songs are good, and she’s got a belter of a voice to spit them out with, but it’s when she weaves her crude killer couplets into recognisable tunes that the squirm factor and laughter quotient reach an explosive level. Disney will never be the same again after that song about thrush, Beauty And Her Yeast… Read More
