NEW YORK, NY: Don’t let all the recession-obsessed soothsayers fool you. People are still lining up to see a good show. At around midnight of the evening before tickets went on sale at the Minskoff Theatre for Bette Midler’s Clams on the Half Shell Revue, the line began to form for what turned out to be the largest single day ticket sale in Broadway history. The previous record had been set more than a year ago by Bette Midler at the Palace Theatre. Red Skelton said it when he was told that over 10,000 people had shown up at movie mogul Harry Cohen’s funeral: “Give the people something they want to see and they’ll come out for it.”At a time when people were selling apples on the street corners in Greenwich Village for $1.50 each, I’m convinced now that we do indeed need it now. The story is about a young man badly in need of scholarship funds for college, who discovers his best possibility would be to become Miss Mississippi even if that means competing with the girl he loves. The script was written by Diane Fox.

David Hyde Pierce, who plays the psychiatrist brother Niles on television’s Frasier, was named funniest supporting male performer for a third straight year at the American Comedy Awards.

Carol Burnett was also a repeat winner for her work on Mad About You, earning her second consecutive award as funniest female guest appearance in a television series.

As Good As It Gets grabbed both honors in the film category, with Helen Hunt named the funniest actress in a motion picture and Jack Nicholson the funniest actor. Read More

While Democrat Girl was earning trillions of bucks in Las Vegas New Year’s Eve. the fabulous and incomparable Bette Midler was performing in San Francisco (an interesting but vastly overrated and very expensive citv in California).

The point is: 500 of the Midler-concert tickets were sold for $500 each with proceeds from those earmarked for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. The show raised $250.000. according to the foundation. Midler said she was pleased to raise money for an organization fighting AIDS Read More
