A second later her bright red head popped out – the hand clutching the throat is her own, in the classic strangulation bit of vaudeville. “I wouldn’t say I invented tack,” Bette Midler observed, nasally, “but I definitely brought it to its present high popularity.” Though meant as a self-effacing remark, it is true. Her virtual one-woman Broadway show this season has been the biggest hit by a solo artist since she herself last brightened the Great White Way in 1973. Read More

Aaron Russo On Bette Midler And The Right Script: “I waited six years for a movie for Bette.

Aaron Russo On Bette Midler And The Right Script: “I waited six years for a movie for Bette. The scripts I read and discarded either lacked quality or weren’t important enough for her. I wanted a role only Bette Midler could play. In other words, if she couldn’t make the picture, the project would have to be abandoned.” (The Evening News, January 19, 1976)

Bette Midler On Her Dad:”He was one of those poohpooher’s You’ll never amount to a hill of beans Maybe it was reverse psychology, hoping against hope that I would amount to something, but it was pretty painful for a long time. However, I used to fight back a lot. He couldn’t keep me down. I had too much inner belief. What can you tell me about Bette Midler? I think she is fantastic! H.C.

Bette’s personality has helped to get her songs right to the top of the charts. She is from Hawaii, which she savs is a wild place. While still there. Bette got some work as a movie extra. It paid S350 a week. The money helped convince her parents that maybe shoe business wasn’t such a bad business and Bette consequently flew to N.Y.

One day a talent coordinator for David Frost saw Bette and signed her for the Frost Show. The audience gave her quite a reception and Frost signed her to five more shows. Merv Griffin jumped on the bandwagon and so did Johnny Carson and Mike Douglas. She was on her way to fame! Read More

Bette Midler On Becoming Her Own Manager After Aaron Russo: “It’s a lot of work, but I’m a workaholic. It’s great not having a manager. It might not always be. For the time being it is wonderful. When it isn’t pleasant any more I’ll find someone else.” (The Free Lance-Star, Sep 22, 1979)

Bette Midler On Her End Goal Starting Out:

Bette Midler On  Her End Goal Starting Out: “When Aaron Russo and I made up our grand plan movies seemed the natural place to go next. Movies were the top of the line; it was as far as someone could go. But I was naive. The kind of movies I wanted to make, the kind of movies I loved as a child, were no longer being made. Claudette Colbert was long gone and she wasn’t coming back.”(Beaver County Times, Apr 9, 1997)
