Bette Midler’s ‘Hello, Dolly’ Wins Top Spot

Entertainment Weekly crowned Hello, Dolly, starring the legendary Bette Midler, as their number 1 musical of 2017. The Hocus Pocus actress took Broadway by storm this year as matchmaker Dolly Levi in the show’s latest revival.  The Tony-winning Midler earned rave reviews for her interpretation of the classic character and continued to entertain audiences despite reliving Geraldo Rivera’s sexual assault. David Rooney: The Best New York Theater of 2017

David Rooney: The Best New York Theater of 2017

Every major production of an August Wilson work is a stinging reminder of the loss of one of American drama’s most uniquely resonant voices. But this belated Broadway debut of the play that launched his magnificent 10-part chronicle of African-American experience in the 20th century — directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson with penetrating emotional depth and irrepressible humor — was something extraordinary. Gritty and lyrical, joyful and sorrowful, the play examines black struggle through the prism of a Pittsburgh gypsy-cab company in 1977, its denizens portrayed here by a peerless ensemble that found music in every note. Bette Midler, also known as The Divine Miss M, is up for a 2017 Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in a Musical for her work in Hello Dolly! She was a vision at the ceremony. Midler’s 2017 Tony Awards dress was a sweet and silver dream. Upon closer inspection, Midler’s gown had this super unique, gunmetal aesthetic. Of course she slayed the frock, top to bottom, back to front.

Yes, Midler is known for her room-filling voice and her larger-than-life persona, which she loves to display in her many unforgettable stage and screen roles. But her evening ensemble was straight up classy. Read More

It has been a long-running gag of Bette Midler’s that she was “robbed” of the 1979 Best Actress Oscar for “The Rose” when she lost to Sally Field for “Norma Rae.” The Divine Miss M has repeatedly brought up the loss in her concerts, on talk shows and it was even worked into a joke on her short-lived sitcom. Will Midler finally get revenge on Field at the Tony Awards this Sunday? Read More

I’ m very happy to be here as a politically active Hollywood woman. I used to be a sexually active Hollywood woman, but these days politics is much safer. (Michael Dukakis Democratic Fundraiser in Beverly Hills, 1988) – Bette Midler

Two topically daring, emotionally moving and wholly original shows, “Dear Evan Hansen” and “Come From Away,” are locked in an unusually tight race for the sought-after prize of best new musical in this year’s Tony Awards, with just hours to go before the deadline for 839 theater industry insiders to submit their ballots.

During the past few days, The New York Times interviewed 67 Tony voters about their ballots. Here’s what we learned: There is an apparent consensus about the season’s four best performances (Kevin Kline and Bette Midler, in particular, can write their acceptance speeches now), as well as the season’s best revivals (12 years after his death, August Wilson’s stature is growing ever-stronger). But Tony voters are deeply divided about the season’s new work, with the race for best new play, as well as the one for best new musical, far too close to call. Read More

Move over Hamilton, here comes The Divine Miss M.

Yes, Bette Midler is packing them in at the fun revival of Hello, Dolly! — which is nominated for 10 Tony Awards.

But she’s far from the only highlight of the 2016-17 season, which wraps up Sunday with the 71st annual Tony Awards (on CBS, 8 p.m. ET).

For theatergoers, this night is bigger than the Super Bowl — and a way to celebrate all that was good during the season. Read More

The Tonys: Secrets of the Campaign Trail With Bette Midler, ‘Evan Hansen’ and More

On a Friday afternoon last month, Bette Midler stood on a dais in the ballroom of a Times Square Marriott and addressed a crowd of Broadway actors, producers, awards nominees, and — most importantly — voters for the 2017 Tony Awards.

She was there to accept the Drama League’s honor for distinguished achievement at the nonprofit’s annual fundraising event. “I’ll add it to my mantelpiece, even though it doesn’t help me spell ‘EGOT,’” she said of the statuette, and then singled out Sally Field in the crowd. “I turn and look at Sally because she has my Oscar,” she joked, and then addressed Glenn Close, also attending. “Glenn, did you ever win? F—, you’re in worse shape than me!” Read More
