There is no square inch of my body that doesn’t require intense maintenance

“There is no square inch of my body that doesn’t require intense maintenance. And it’s a bloody bore. But it’s a fabulous body, and I don’t want to see it disintegrate. I mean, if you have a beautiful car, don’t you keep up your beautiful car? If you have a beautiful home, don’t you keep up your beautiful home? I do ” (Los Angeles Times, 1997) – Bette Midler

On Rosalind Russell being awful in Gypsy: “I don’t think anything Rosalind Russell ever did could be awful!

On Rosalind Russell being awful in Gypsy: “I don’t think anything Rosalind Russell ever did could be awful! I adored her! I thought she was totally brilliant, totally brilliant, and very underused and underrated. She did get some kind of humanitarian award at the end, but she was a genius! When you watch her in `Auntie Mame’ or in `His Girl Friday,’ you just can’t conceive that she wasn’t queen of the world!”(1993, Washington Post)

Freak Show’ tackles cliché with ‘trans-visionary’ grace
BY SOPHIE-MARIE PRIME

Editor’s Note: The arts and entertainment department is adjusting its grading scale from a letter-grade system to a numeric score out of 5. This change is intended to increase accuracy and consistency between reviews.

Director Trudie Styler described “Freak Show” as a “story of resistance” — and that’s right on the mark. Adapted from the James St. James novel of the same name, the film follows queer teen Billy Bloom (Alex Lawther of “The Imitation Game” fame). Lawther’s performance is spell-binding and genuine — Billy is radiant in extravagant costumes and possesses unapologetic confidence to boot. Read More

Bette Midler On Her TV Show:

Bette Midler On Her TV Show: “The pace is absolutely brutal. I had no idea it would be so hard. I’m worn out. The show has taken over my life. I reached a point last year where I couldn’t go on. But don’t worry about me. I’m such a whiner. I’ll be fine.” (The Virginian-Pilot, January 18, 2001)

The revival of the Broadway show “Hello, Dolly!,” starring Bette Midler, has been trying to insert itself into the 2016 election ahead of its March debut, while playing up its political past.

The show has run into some roadblocks as part of that effort, however. A proposed advertisement set to run on the front page of a special “For President” section in the New York Times on Tuesday was rejected by the newspaper. The special section’s front page, which features profiles on Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, was slated to have an ad in bright red at the bottom with an all caps “IT TAKES A WOMAN,” the title of one of the songs from the show.
