‘Hello, Dolly!’ could bring Whoopi Goldberg back to Broadway stage\
By Joseph V. Amodio Special to Newsday February 9, 2018

Whoopi Goldberg just might be looking to head back to Broadway where her career began, the actress said Thursday during New York Fashion Week.

“It would be nice to get onstage again,” the “View” co-host said before the start of the Adam Selman show at Spring Studios in TriBeCa, where she had a front-row seat. But she added: “I don’t have any plans at the moment.” Read More

Bernadette Peters: The Broadway legend on her Hollywood problem, using theater as therapy, and replacing Bette Midler

The Broadway legend on her Hollywood problem, using theater as therapy, and replacing Bette Midler

Fabulous fan art from @heidschoetter! ???? #HelloDolly

A post shared by Hello, Dolly! (@hellodollybway) on

Since coming to theatrical prominence in the mid-’70s and attaining even shinier status the following decade (thanks largely to her work in the original production of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park With George), Bernadette Peters has occupied an unusual dual position. She’s both a very particular type — a bona fide Broadway star, one of the few remaining — and in her warmth, humor, and vulnerability, utterly unique as a performer. “I understand that other people might see something special in what I do,” says Peters, dressed all in black, her famous red curls flowing over shoulder, and speaking (graciously, cautiously) from a meeting room in her publicist’s office in midtown Manhattan, “but I don’t think I’m the one who can say what that is.” Read More

Jan 30, 2018

Bette Midler, aka The Queen of Broadway, has vacated her throne, having concluded her run in the smash Hello, Dolly!. But her successor Bernadette Peters isn’t having the easiest time settling in – at least at the box office.

Midler was commanding about $2.3 million a week in sales. With her out, the numbers took a relative nosedive: Peters’s first at-bat brought in $1.17 million. Read More

Broadway Box Office: “Hello, Dolly!” Without Bette Midler Falls to Earth

Deadline
Broadway B.O.: ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ Glides As ‘Hello, Dolly!’ Slides On Winter’s Icy Road
by Jeremy Gerard
January 29, 2018 2:02pm

Broadway’s winter lull focuses all eyes on the slim pickings as long-runs host 2-for-1 sales, houses sit empty in anticipation of the spring semester and shows hustle to sustain momentum after stars have exited for the ski slopes or warmer climes.

Tony winner Ben Platt has left Dear Evan Hansen, but that musical, with Noah Galvin taking over in the title role, still is drawing a premium of nearly 20% above its gross potential at the Shubert Organization’s Music Box Theatre, with one of the highest per-ticket averages on the Street. AMNewYork: Bette Midler’s ‘Hello, Dolly!’ the best show on the NYC stage last year

AMNewYork
Bette Midler’s ‘Hello, Dolly!’ the best show on the NYC stage this year
By Matt Windman amNewYork Theater Critic December 28, 2017

In many cases, 2017 showed New York theater at its very best — and in other cases, at its worst. Below is my personal list of highs and lows for the year.

Best of the year:

1. ‘Hello, Dolly!’

Was anyone surprised that this turned out to be a match made in musical comedy heaven? As led by Bette Midler, this lavish revival is a celebration of life crafted in old-fashioned showmanship and pure euphoria. Bernadette Peters will take over as Dolly after Midler exits the show next month. Read More

Broadway B.O. Leaps Even As ‘Lion King’ & ‘Wicked’ Feel Winter Chill

Deadline Hollywood
Broadway B.O. Leaps Even As ‘Lion King’ & ‘Wicked’ Feel Winter Chill
by Jeremy Gerard
January 16, 2018 2:06pm

With the three-day Martin Luther King holiday weekend as a spur, the Broadway box office defied the January trend, pole-vaulting 27% over the same week in 2017 and even surpassing the previous week by 2%. All that despite some staggering nose-dives among the family-friendly crowd.

That includes Disney’s two shows: The Lion King was off $681K from the previous week at the Nederlander Organization’s Minskoff Theatre, while Aladdin, installed at the Mouse’s New Amsterdam flagship, skidded nearly a quarter-million dollars. It wasn’t a great week for Andrew Lloyd Webber, either: The Phantom of the Opera, tagging the 30-year mark at the Shubert Organization’s Majestic Theatre, fell a chandelier-swinging $371K, while School of Rock, at the Shuberts’ Winter Garden, was off $193K. Wicked, at the Nederlanders’ Gershwin, was off $280K from the week before. Read More
