Do Gay Men Love, Dislike or Feel Indifferent About Taylor Swift?
Instinct Staff | November 12, 2017

Gay men have had their share of female icons in their lives over the course of the past fifty years. Names that come to mind include Barbra Streisand, Cher, Madonna, Bette Midler and more. For my generation, the debate for many years was who did we like more: Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera?

Although those are all still legendary names in the music business, the past couple of years has seen the rise of men in the industry dominating the charts after women like Beyonce, Lady Gaga and more were the ones at the top. Taylor Swift, however, has once again become the diva of the moment and catapulted herself back into the pop stratosphere due to the release of her album Reputation, which is already on track to selling well over a million copies in its first week of release. Meet the greatest LGBT icons over 70 years old

Meet the greatest LGBT icons over 70 years old

Here, however, we’re paying homage to some of our favourite gay icons (and allies) over the age of 70. (Not that you’d know they were.)

Cher

71-year-old Cher looks more glam, fit and fabulous than the majority of us ever have. More importantly, however, she’s one of the gay community’s most vocal advocates. As well as playing a lesbian in the film Silkwood, and cameoing in Will & Grace as the idol of gay character Jack McFarland, Cher supported her son Chaz Bono’s gender transition. Mainstream music embraces LGBT perspective

From Bette Midler and Madonna all the way through Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, performers courting gay audiences and incorporating lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender themes into their songs is a pop music tradition.

But increasingly, it’s more than just big-voiced divas tapping into the LGBT community: Just as Gaga’s 2011 hit was dubbed a LGBT anthem for its messages of self-love, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ Same Love made waves in 2012 with strong statements against homophobia and for acceptance. Read More

Being Young & Coming Out To Bette Midler
‘You Make Me Happy To Be Who I Am’

Bette

When you’re a 12-year-old gay boy in middle school, you don’t really have an overt sexuality, just many flamboyant hobbies. Yes, I still gravitated toward all the hyperfeminized figurines and performed exquisitely executed cartwheels at a very early age, but most of the time I was watching and imitating Bette Midler. That fabulous laugh, that energy, her ferocious tenacity to proudly proclaim “I’m beautiful dammit!” – what is not to adore about the woman? Read More

Bette Midler, Gay Marriage and the End of Gay Culture

THE GAY CURMUDGEON
Bette Midler, Gay Marriage and the End of Gay Culture

This has been a historic week. In the same week the Supreme Court upheld both Obamacare and gay marriage. And in the same week, after not having been to a concert at Madison Square Garden in two years, I saw two gay divas there: Bette Midler and Morrissey. (The last concert I saw there was that of another gay diva, Lady Gaga.)

Bette Midler’s concert was an emotional show for both of us. For her, it was a triumphant homecoming after a long career. But it was a homecoming for me, as well. Read More

Bette Midler Agreeing To Do Gypsy Was A Big Career Changer For Meron/Zadan

Interview: Neil Meron & Craig Zadan on their Legacy, Producing The Oscars & “Smash” Season 2
Posted by Jim Halterman, Entertainment Reporter on October 10, 2012

The busy producing team of Neil Meron and Craig Zadan got a little busier recently when the duo, who head up Storyline Entertainment, were tapped to produce a little show called the Academy Awards next spring and the recent announcement that Seth MacFarlane would host created a stir in the Hollywood community. The Advocate Turns 45

The Advocate
45 Years of Stirring the Pot
Ever since the first issue of The Advocate clandestinely rolled off the presses in 1967, the content of the magazine has engendered debate, adulation, and occasionally venom.
BY ADVOCATE CONTRIBUTORS AUGUST 21 2012 4:00 AM ET

At The Advocate we’ve worked hard to keep people talking about the issues of the day, though the response to some articles was not always what we expected. Sometimes we got it wrong, and sometimes, despite our best efforts (or because of them), we became part of the news ourselves. Read More

Films: The Best Of Outfest 2012 Preview

LA Weekly
Outfest 2012 Preview: 9 Films to See
By Ernest Hardy and Chuck Wilson
Thursday, Jul 12 2012

(Bette Midler & Vito Russo)

We cannot tell a lie: There are some seriously terrible films playing at the 30th annual Outfest, the gay and lesbian film festival that runs July 12-22. Such is the nature of a festival that encourages young, do-it-yourself filmmaking (and which has 12 days to fill).

Outfest veterans will forgive the turkeys, and so will we — eventually. In the meantime, here are some films that surprised and moved us and, better yet, renewed our faith in the possibilities of queer cinema. Read More
