Review: ‘Hello, Dolly!’ Is Bright, Brassy and All Bette (New York Times)

New York Times
Review: ‘Hello, Dolly!’ Is Bright, Brassy and All Bette

The pinnacle of fine dining in New York these days can’t be found in a Michelin-starred restaurant, though it will probably cost you just as much. No, you’ll have to get yourself and your wide-open wallet to the Shubert Theater, where the savory spectacle of Bette Midler eating turns out to be the culinary event of the year.

Ms. Midler — who opened in the title role of “Hello, Bette!,” I mean “Hello, Dolly!,” on Thursday night — not only knows how to make a meal out of a juicy part; she knows how to make a meal out of a meal. In the second act of this exceedingly bright and brassy revival, Ms. Midler can be found sitting alone at a table, slowly and deliberately polishing off the remnants of an expensive dinner, from a turkey bone dipped in gravy to a multitude of dumplings, while the rest of the cast freezes in open-mouthed amazement. Bette Midler returns to Broadway in her first musical role in 50 years, headlining opposite David Hyde Pierce in a sumptuous revival of the classic Jerry Herman musical.

You feel a distinct sense of occasion stepping into the Shubert Theatre these days, evident in the buzzing sound of the audience before the plush red velvet curtain rises, and then turned up a few notches in the effusive round of applause as the orchestra strikes up the first notes of the title song in the brassy overture to Hello, Dolly! But that’s nothing compared to the show-stopping outpouring of ecstasy that greets the inimitable star, Bette Midler, when she makes her sly surprise entrance on a trolley car. Read More

Rejoice! Bette Midler is back onstage in New York, opening this week in the title role of the Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly!

Depending on your personal tastes, you may know Midler best from her 14 studio albums, her countless tours, or her colorful movie roles, from 1979’s The Rose (for which she won the first of her three Golden Globes) to this year’s Freak Show. Midler first garnered recognition worldwide for her 1972 album The Divine Miss M, which won her a Grammy for Best New Artist, and she has had more soundtrack credits than acting roles over the years. But her star trajectory can be traced back to an early string of off-off-Broadway productions after she moved to New York from her native Hawaii in 1965. Just a year after performing in roles that were many miles from the Great White Way (figuratively, anyway), Midler landed the role of a lifetime as Tzeitel in the 1967 Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof, and the rest is history.
