BetteBack January 19, 1978: Broken Blossom Review

Bette Midler isn’t called “divine” without reason.

She has a natural talent that doesn’t need any adornments, as demonstrated on “Broken Blossoms” (Atlantic SD 19151).

However, Miss Midler enhances her divine style with imaginative vocals on “Make Yourself Comfortable” and “La Vie En
Rose.”

Other tuneful melodies in this selection are “Say Goodbye to Hollywood,” “Paradise,” “Empty Bed Blues” and “A Dream Is a
Wish Your Heart Makes.” Read More

What drew you to this role?
It’s a really inventive show, and I’ve always loved fairy tales. It’s fun to wave your hand and have someone fly across the room!

Do you have a favorite fairy tale?
I’m addicted to the entire Oz book series by L. Frank Baum, who wrote
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. They were always my favorites as a kid. Read More

FEBRUARY 27, 2013 12:01 PM

Documentary filmmaker Malcolm Ingram, whose work has focused on issues facing the gay community, tells the historical story of the notorious 1970s New York City bathhouse that transcended sexuality in “Contintental.” The film charts the pivotal role the Continental Bathhouse played in social tolerance and the creation of a safe haven for gay men at the time, as well as being a hub for the discovery of several legendary musicians. True confession: I’m a Bette Midler fan. Wait! Stay with me for a moment I’m not referring to Midler’s sappy “Wind Beneath My Wings” phase. (I couldn’t get through her “Beaches” period without a shot of tequila, and even then it was difficult.) I mean the unpolished Midler of the New York City bathhouse days: Sophie Tucker jokes and outrageous costumes like giant hotdogs and mermaids performing choreographed routines in motorized wheelchairs. Irreverent. Unpredictable. Creative. Edgy. Simply put: Great fun! You can’t tell from looking at me that I will always carry a torch for that bawdy 1970s torch singer. Read More
