Cinema in Focus: ‘Parental Guidance’

With tender humor, this film explores both the struggle a child may have with a parent, and how parents struggle to be loved and understood by their children

The generational differences in parenting are humorously explored in Andy Fickman’s film Parental Guidance.

Our natural tendency is to see the mistakes made by our parents and then pledge not to be like them when we are parents. But the problem with trying to not be like our parents is that this negative evaluation only shows us how not to act while providing little guidance on how we could act as a better way to parent. The result is that each generation of parents has the best of intentions but often only makes new mistakes as new methods of parenting are attempted. Read More

“Make Yourself Comfortable” By Bette Midler

I’ve got some records here
to put you in the mood.
The phone is off the hook
so no one can intrude.
I feel romantic
and the record changes automatic, baby.

Sweetheart, we hurried through the dinner
and we hurried through the dance.
We left before the picture show was through.
Why did we hurry through the dinner
and hurry through the dance?
To leave some time for this.
To hug and hug and kiss and kiss. Read More

BetteBack July 11, 1977: Bette Gets Caps

San Antonio Light
July 11, 1977

You’ll hardly recognize Bette Midler next time you see her. In addition to new caps on her teeth the marvelous one is aglow with a new romance. An actor named Peter Riegert. Nothing like a new love to beautify a gal, etc, etc, etc.

BetteBack July 8, 1977:Bette Signs To Do Movie, ‘Two For the Seesaw’

Blytheville Courier News
July 8, 1977

A SAFe BETTE: The news that Bette Midler has been signed to star in “Two on the Seesaw,” a film based on the Broadway
musical “Seesaw,” came as a bit of a surprise to composer Cy Coleman. Coleman, who most recently composed the music for “I Love My Wife,” did the music for “Seesaw,” which will be heard again in the movie. It was Coleman’s hope to star Midler in the Broadway show, but the singer declined Coleman’s invitation. This time it was director Michael Bennett who persuaded Midler to take on the film project. The movie is reportedly going to try to be more commercially oriented than the Broadway show, which drew critical raves but made little money when it ran four years ago. Read More
