Parental Guidance: How It Became A Box Office Hit

The Wrap
How Fox Marketed ‘Parental Guidance‘ Into a Box Office Hit
By Todd Cunningham
January 7, 2013

“Parental Guidance” was “the other Christmas movie,” and didn’t generate near the pre-release heat that “Django Unchained” or “Les Miserables” did. But the Billy CrystalBette Midler family comedy has quietly turned into a box-office hit for Fox.

“Django” and “Les Miz” cleared the $100 million mark at the domestic box office this weekend, and “Parental Guidance” may never do that. But it’s made nearly $53 million in 13 days and is on track to wind up north of $70 million. Produced by Crystal and Peter Chernin for $25 million — half what “Les Miz” cost and a quarter of the “Django” budget — it’s a winner already. Read More

303 Magazine Talks To The PR Officer Of NYRP ~ A Hands On Interview

303 Magazine
Hollywood’s Eyes on Charity: NYRP a project by Bette Midler
by NICOLE HIGGINS on Jan 7, 2013 • 12:42 pm

In 1995 Bette Midler quite possibly never dreamed that the New York Restoration Project would flourish into one of the most substantial charities not only in New York, but around the country. A woman who set out to refine the streets of the city that gave birth to her career, Bette Midler was on a mission.

I had the privilege of speaking with the PR Officer heading up NYRP – Anne Tan. She gave me the opportunity to see the organization through the eyes of someone who not only works for the project, but also grew up with the restoration project as a influential part in her daily life. Read More

Bette Midler Confirms Broadway Role As Super Agent Sue Mengers ~ Opens April 24!

Bette Midler to Play Superagent Sue Mengers on Broadway

The recipe for a successful one-character play would, at minimum, seem to call for two things: a powerful woman to base it upon and a powerful woman to play her. And a newly announced theater project surely has both: Bette Midler will perform on Broadway for the first time in more than 30 years in a play about the Hollywood superagent Sue Mengers, its producers said on Monday. The play, called “I’ll Eat You Last: A Chat With Sue Mengers,” is written by John Logan and will be directed by Joe Mantello, and is scheduled to open on April 24 at a Shubert theater still to be determined. Before Lez Miz: 5 Other Films Featuring Live Singing

Vulture
Les Miz Before Les Miz: Five Other Movie Musicals That Featured Live Singing
By Bilge Ebiri
January 7, 2013

Much has been made of the fact that the actors in Les Misérables actually sang on-camera, as they were being filmed, instead of lip-synching to prerecorded tracks. (Remember this lengthy featurette, which seemingly aired before every movie released last fall?) Indeed, some of the movie’s press would have you believe that this is the first time this has ever been attempted in a musical film. To which we say: Untrue! Not only have other movies attempted this, but it was actually the norm in the early sound era. Here are five other musicals that used live singing, from the early days of Hollywood right through to the seventies. Read More

5 Things The Box Office Tells Us This Week

Pop Goes The Week
Five Things We’ve Learned From This Weekend’s Box Office
ENTERTAINMENT, FEATURED, MOVIES — BY  ON 2013/01/07 11:01 AM

LESSON ONE – Horror isn’t Just For Halloween / Recycling Works – Texas Chainsaw 3D is reigning supreme, with an impressive 23 million in its opening weekend. January has become a surprising new home for horror films in recent years. Perhaps folks need a break from the good cheer of December. Previous January releases on the more morbid side include The Devil Inside and My Bloody Valentine. Meanwhile, its success is proof positive that sometimes an old idea can still mow down the competition. The first Chainsaw movie was The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 1974. There have been no less than SEVEN Chainsaw inspired films since. Read More

Parental Guidance: Grandmother Knows Best

Bridgewater Mercury
FILM: Parental Guidance
January 7, 2012

GRANDMOTHER knows best in Parental Guidance, an intergenerational comedy of bad manners and frayed tempers which welcomes Bette Midler back to the big screen after four years.

The Oscar-nominated actress and singer looks resplendent in soft lighting, bridging most of the 19- year age gap to on-screen daughter Marisa Tomei, and belts out an impromptu rendition of The Book Of Love by The Monotones with co-star Billy Crystal.

The film focuses on the central clash between old-fashioned ideals and 21st Century desires. Read More

BetteBack January 2, 1977: By Popular Demand HBO Brings Back Fabulous Bette Midler Concert For Pay-TV Viewers

Home Box Office Brings Back Fabulous Bette Midler Concert For Pay-TV Viewers
By WILLIAM D. KERNS
Fine Arts Editor
January 2, 1977

The odds are against the vast majority of Lubbockites ever seeing a Bette Midler concert in person. But thanks to the miracles of that still controversial technical advance known as Home Box Office commercial-free television, the South Plains will be able to view one of her greatest shows four more times this month.

And what a show It is.

Completely mesmerizirtg, this show — which was recorded and filmed at the Cleveland Music Hall in February 1976 — is a brilliant conception of showmanship. Indeed, it is the sort of musical entertainment which quickly inspires the viewer to turn out the lights, strike a match to a candle, turn up the sound and wish he was there. Read More
