Dear Bette Midler, don’t hold your breath. The veteran actress revealed over the weekend that she is still waiting on phone call from Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy about the guest-starring role he very publicly offered to her back in October. Although Midler has already thought up a role for herself, as Sue’s evil sister, someone might warn to lower Midler’s expectations. After all, Murphy has done this a few times before… without making good on his offer. Need proof? We’ve compiled a list of the five other famous faces also waiting for that fateful call.
The Dark Knight Rises star got the rumor mill churning back in 2010 when she confessed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon that she had already written herself a role on Glee – that of Kurt’s long-lost lesbian aunt – his mom’s sister – who helps him deal with his sexuality. She even had a song – “You Are Not Alone” from Into the Woods – picked out for the occasion. Murphy fueled the fire in January 2011 when he revealed backstage at the Golden Globes that Hathaway would be appearing on the show. Although Kurt (Chris Colfer) is a lot more comfortable with his sexuality these days than when Hathaway first conceived of the role during Season 2, his Christmas flashbacks about his mom reignited fans’ interest in the former Mrs. Hummel’s family. Also, considering the acclaim Hathaway is currently receiving for her role in Les Miserables, her character would have plenty of expertise to offer Kurt as he heads to NYADA.
Before “Glambert” was also rumored to be joining the American Idol judges table – if only! – Murphy told Entertainment Weekly that he was considering approaching the Idol runner-up about guest-starring way back in 2009. The idea got a big thumbs up from star Lea Michele who compared singing with Lambert to “getting to work out at the gym with the best trainer in the world,” she told MTV News. Unfortunately, Lambert squashed the hopes of Michele and Gleeks everywhere when he told Ryan Seacrest, “I think that’s just a rumor, I haven’t heard anything officially about that.”
Apparently there’s nothing like a big awards show win – and perhaps a little bubbly – to get Murphy to spill on future guest stars. A year before he discussed Hathaway’s appearance backstage at the Golden Globes, he told the press backstage at the same awards show that Lopez wanted to come on and that the writers wanted her to play a cafeteria lady. A year after the rumors started, Lopez told Access Hollywood Live that she and Murphy were “waiting for the right moment.” Maybe the infamous McKinley High tater tot strike of 2010 would have gone down differently if Lopez had been in the mix.
When Murphy directed the Oscar winner in Eat Pray Love, Bardem made the most of the collaboration and also pitched himself as a possible Season 2 guest star after watching the entire first season in one week. “We’re going to rock the house,” Bardem told Entertainment Weekly of the role, which would have cast him as a rock star who befriends Artie (Kevin McHale). “We’re going to do some heavy metal – Spanish heavy metal, which is the worst.” So maybe Glee dodged a bullet by putting this idea on the back burner? The following summer, Bardem admitted on Jimmy Kimmel Live that he doesn’t sing at all, but that he still wanted to appear because of his love for the show. However, Bardem added he thought Murphy was “afraid” of the idea and sounded more doubtful about his chances.
Before visions of Lopez in a hairnet started dancing around in Murphy’s head, it was Britain’s Got Talent runner-up and YouTube sensation Susan Boyle whom he dream-cast as a lunch lady. “I think Kurt would just die to give her a Christmas makeover,” Murphy told Entertainment Weekly back in May 2010. “I don’t even know if she’s interested but it’s been pitched.” Did Boyle turn him down? Did Murphy change his mind after her inevitable fall from her pop pedestal? Either way, it might have been for the best since Kurt was busy singing “Baby It’s Cold Outside” with then-new crush Blaine (Darren Criss) in the Season 2 Christmas episode.
