LONDON — Bette Midler and U.K. thrush Pixie Lott will star in Peter Hewitt‘s “Sweet Baby Jesus,” which will begin shooting this summer in Maryland and Ireland.
The 70s flashback pic, penned by Steve Blair, sees hippies Mary — played by Lott, making her thesping bow — and Joe (yet to be cast) make their way to the town of Bethlehem, Maryland to visit Mary’s mom for Christmas. Mary reveals she is pregnant – but not by her boyfriend Joe – and then stays at Eleanor’s (Midler) guesthouse for the holidays and soon the whole town is talking about a possible second coming.

London-based Intandem Films is handling international sales for the pic.

Hewitt, who has previously directed “Garfield” and “Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey,” said: “The script (for ‘Sweet Baby Jesus’) has such fun subverting the treasured details of the Nativity, posing the question, ‘What would we do if it all happened again?’ ”

The pic’s producer, Philippe Rebboah added: “There are a lot more surprises to be announced on the cast, especially for the role of Joe. We are signing other great actors, yet to be announced. The music will also be very important for this film and we’re going to be including original songs of the 70s and modern day artists.”

    1. Bette’s people won’t confirm it yet but this story won’t go away…..and I have never heard hide nor hair of Pixie Lott. Maybe some Yukkers can fill us in…. 🙂

  1. Pixie Lott is a sort-of-manufactured starlet: there’s an album which is expensively produced and selling well, and she has great PR: she manages to appear at all the right events. She’s sort of puckish and punky, and I can imagine her sparking off Bette.

Of course, what we really want is for Bette to tour the Yuk while she’s over here filming…

  2. omg i have family near baltimore, maybe i could schlepp down to visit them during filming and maybe find where they are shooting so that i could maybe watch from a distance 🙂

  3. “Hewitt, who has previously directed “Garfield” and “Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey,” said: “The script (for ‘Sweet Baby Jesus’) has such fun subverting the treasured details of the Nativity, posing the question, ‘What would we do if it all happened again?’”

The director of “Garfield” and “Bill and Ted…”?! I’m not sure. The director is the most important thing nowadays… “Garfield” was not a good film. To me this plot has big chances of being funny, but also huge chances of being crap.

Mr. D, what’s the title of that terrible film Miss M made messing up with Jesus? It was changed to The Divine Mr. J… Perhaps Bette messed up with this story enough.

I watched 2 music videos by Pixie Lott: “Mama Do” and “Boys and Girls”. I’m not impressed. Visually she’s a cross between Britney Spears and Cristina Aguilera, without Aguilera’s powerful voice. Musically she sounds pop with a dash of Amy Winehouse. Universal Music is backing her.

If Lott’s people is really powerful and creative, perhaps, this could be a good project for The Divine One. Let’s see what Bette decides. She probably has much more info than us.

    1. yeah, this sounds really iffy. i’ll feel more comfortable if sam rockwell gets involved. you’re talking about The Thorn….here’s hoping she makes the right decision….
