In her last big public performance she pretended to stab herself to death while playing the piano and then hung from the ceiling, covered in blood.

Presumably, Lady Gaga will tone it down a bit for this year’s Royal Variety Performance.

The controversial singer has been booked to perform in front of the most senior members of the Royal household at the annual event.

It is a surprise choice for a night traditionally filled with faces from light entertainment such as Bruce Forsyth, Nat King Cole, Cliff Richard and Katherine Jenkins.

Lady Gaga is the alter ego of New Yorker Stefani Germanotta, 23.

She took her stage name from Queen hit Radio Gaga after a music producer compared her voice and style to that of the late Freddie Mercury.

Her debut album The Fame, which features hits such as Just Dance and Poker Face, has sold more than four million copies worldwide since it was released last year.

She is best known for her outrageous outfits and performances, including the bloody rendition of her hit song Paparazzi earlier this year at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Dressed in a skimpy white costume she pretended to knife herself, screaming as fake blood leaked all over her.

For another performance at New York Fashion Week she wore a see-through red lace bodysuit and skimpy g-string.

The Queen’s aides are undoubtedly hoping that the singer will cover up when she meets the monarch in December.

A palace spokesman said: ‘I really don’t know if the Queen or Prince Philip have listened to Lady Gaga, or are familiar with her.

‘But the Royal Variety Performance is a well-known charitable event which they support and they meet all the stars involved.’

The event will be held on December 7 at Blackpool’s Opera House and will be broadcast on ITV later that month.

Comedian Peter Kay will host the show, and there will be performances from stars such as Bette Midler, Whoopi Goldberg, Mika, Alexandra Burke and Michael Buble.

The event is staged in aid of the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund, whose patron is the Queen.
